Here is an opinion piece I found by Chad Davis, arguing for an experimental film category at the Oscars. Experimental cinema has always been divided between the film world and the art world (and you could say ignored by both).

Experimental film at Oscars

The Oscars are a Hollywood celebration of Hollywood. I shudder to think what the experimental choices would look like-probably commercials.

Yes, the category doesn't

Yes, the category doesn't really make any sense. I cannot imagine the usual Academy member voting on this category, or selecting films for it!
