In its twelfth edition and for the first time, FICUNAM presents UMBRALES (Thresholds), an exhibition dedicated to the freest and most radical expressions of the cinematographic avant-garde. 58 international and Mexican films, by renowned and emerging artists and filmmakers, allow tributes and revisions where milestones and classics of the genre coexist with the contemporary in permanent dialogue.
UMBRALES combines exhibition of experimental cinema in film —16mm and 35mm— and digital in movie theaters —in addition to events and sessions of expanded cinema— together with online exhibition through streaming platforms.
The curatorship of UMBRALES includes a series of films commissioned from the festival and presented by Síntesis, which will have their world premiere at FICUNAM as the first installment of an experimental film commissioning program —Umbral 0— that seeks to inject energy and resources into a cinema powerful but marginal, neglected by production backdrops and conventional display windows.
UMBRALES' offer is complemented by a printed publication —exclusive and bilingual— made up of unpublished contributions by artists and filmmakers on their creative processes and investigative imaginaries, as well as curatorial texts that accompany each program of the exhibition.
