  • Ernie Gehr: Mechanical Magic

    By on

Though he is commonly described as one of the most consequential filmmakers in avant-garde cinema and structural film, Ernie Gehr has produced a body of work that defies all definitions and widens our perception of what we call “cinema.” Since the 1960s, Gehr has offered audiences manufactured dreams of light, shadow, and motion, invigorated by an unresolved tension between the limit of the camera’s frame and the scope of viewers’ imaginations.

    By on

"The short films in this program reflect a mix of formal experiments and collaborations that often feed into and fuel some of my longer poetic narratives, essay and autobiographical films, spanning my 45 year practice. Formally, the first half of the program are mid-career works which experiment with techniques of fragmentation through shooting, editing optical printing and through photo-chemical processes.

  • Spaghetti Style

    By on

The term 'spaghetti style' refers to pouring and agitating film in a developing tank, much like stirring spaghetti. Some view this as a cheap, non-standard approach that deviates from regulated processes. However, for those who venture outside institutional norms and believe in the accidental beauty that emerges from deficiencies and lacks, it represents a precious alternative method. Inside the darkness, films overlap, brush each other, and leave their traces. When the lid of the tank and the door open, the light enters the darkroom.

  • Seasonal Affects: Films of Jonathan Schwartz

    By on

Jonathan Schwartz made films as he lived his life.  His short works are gestures of appreciation and awe towards the world and for those he loved.   They are often also dialogs with texts and ideas he found compelling.  In all his 16mm films, he gives expression to both the beauties of the concrete and the transience and potency of ineluctable time. A flower, a face, melting ice, a shift in light — Jonathan’s lens holds them with generosity and care, for his and our gaze.  Time becomes a palpable preoccupation through his filming of the seasons and their variations, and in his own cinematic processes.  These include his physical movements with the camera and the in-camera winding and re-winding of filmstock to embody both his and the world’s fortuitous memory.
