  • AVANT 2014: Found and Excavated

    By on

The theme of the 11th edition of AVANT is Found and Excavated. Films, videos and live performances based on re-edited found footage, or films that have been going through processes of decay and destruction, film that is in constant transformation, aesthetically or politically.

Friday evening begins with a selection of films by the German collective Schmelzdahin and continues with a live performance of the film Materia Obscura, made by the film alchemist and former Schmelzdahin member Jürgen Reble and with live music by the multimedia artist Thomas Köner.

Saturday opens with four films by Matthias Müller and Christoph Girardet who have excavated new stories from well-known movies by re-editing and assembling them anew. After this follows a complete retrospective of the films by Schmelzdahin and a screening of Wolfgang Lehmann’s one hour long intense flickering journey into the fantastic world of nature documentaries. Saturday concludes with two programmes: The Spanish artist Maria Cañas’ political collages and a unique program with Soviet and Russian found footage film, curated by Masha Godovannaya.

  • Film Farm 20th Anniversary Screening

    By on

For 20 years The Independent Imaging Retreat or ‘Film Farm’ has been developing a hands-on, artisanal approach to filmmaking that is far removed from the costly, hierarchical and inaccessible industrial model.  Each summer it brings to Mount Forest Ontario a small group of interested filmmakers – some novices and some highly experienced – for an intensive week of shooting, hand-processing, tinting/toning, watching and editing film — most of the action taking place in and around an old barn on the Normanby Township property, in rural Ontario.

The Film Farm L.A. 20th Anniversary Show includes early and recent films (16mm and digital), and concentrates its light on those `film farmers’ who have graced the west coast scene with their exquisite, playful and committed works on celluloid.

  • Life Is an Opinion: Films by Mary Helena Clark & Karen Yasinsky

    By on

Artists Mary Helena Clark and Karen Yasinsky in person

Between the Idea and the Reality Falls the Shadow. An uneasy wind blows through these films. With aesthetic interests in magic, illusionism and deception, local filmmaker Mary Helena Clark creates films permeated with mysterious associations, ineffably assembled according to dream logics into fragmentary formations of distant or lost lives. Clark’s films resonate at a seemingly quantum level with recent films by the Baltimore-based Karen Yasinsky whose works evidence a similar interest in the fragment using puppetry, animation, cinematic quotation and hints of narrative to trigger emotive positions of discomfort and empathy.

    Dates:

    Saturday, September 13, 2014 - 19:30

  • 22nd Chicago Underground Film Festival

    By on

The Chicago Underground Film Festival exists to showcase the defiantly independent filmmaker. Our mission is to promote films and videos that dissent radically in form, technique, or content from the "indie" mainstream and to present adventurous works that challenge and transcend commercial and audience expectations...if you suspect your film is "underground," it probably is.

Founded in 1993, The Chicago Underground Film Festival (CUFF) is a year-round organization dedicated to the work of film and video makers with defiantly independent visions. Unlike many other “independent” film events our goal is not to imitate old guard, market-driven events such as Sundance but Instead to focus on the artistc, aesthetic and fun side of independent filmmaking. CUFF promotes works that dissent radically in form, content and technique from both the tired conventions of Hollywood and the increasingly stagnant IndieWood mainstream.

  • The Mechanical Paradise: The Films Of Steven Woloshen

    By on

The phrase "the Mechanical Paradise", coined by Robert Hughes in his book The Shock of the New, reflected new visions in painting and sculpture in the age of machines, Kino Pravda (cinema) being among the chosen mediums of this post-WWI movement.

LIFT is pleased to welcome Steven Woloshen to Toronto to present a screening of his lush and energetic hand-made films. Woloshen presents sixteen short, animated and experimental films, highlighting the mechanics and the art of the perforated film strip: cinema's direct assembly line. This 16mm/35mm film screening will cover 30 years of his unique abstract film strategies, which are scraped, glued, painted and burnt onto the surface of the film. The results dance along to their propulsive jazz soundtracks, creating a rhythmic beauty as tiny frame-by-frame gestures are writ large on the cinema screen.

  • Sight Unseen presents Creative Destruction: The Smyth Brothers

    By on

Creative destruction is an economic concept that describes the paradox of progress by attaching evolutionary theory to capitalism. "It's the process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one." The dualistic nature pairs well with who we are as twins and the stories we try to tell- tales of a people and their pursuit of money. How does this pursuit mutate now that change is the only constant in capitalism?
