Memory in Decay

On Saturday October 8th, Maenad Collective - a recently established studio art space in Ridgewood, New York - will be sharing a series of 8mm films by artist and filmmaker Alex Faoro. The images, presented throughout the space, will be accompanied by live cello and sound processing by musician Alice Gerlach. There will also be a number of objects (related to the films), displayed amongst the projections; a shovel, an 8mm camera, a pile of dirt, a bucket of water.

Culling images from his catalogue of personal materials, Alex Faoro enacts various methods of decay to create colorful and synaptic films that explore the ontology of memory. Using self-made images and found footage - sometime together - he produces transfixing works that convey the aesthetic and processual qualities of recall, and consider the complex relation between memory, materiality, forgetting and the moving image.

Maenad Collective is comprised of six artists whose combined work reveals alternative histories, resists heteronormativity, and exposes systems of oppression.
