Claudio Caldini began filming in Super 8 in the mid-1970s in Argentina. This light format allowed him to bypass the limitations of professional cinema and to obtain a personal aesthetic that is deeply linked to his practice and vision of cinema. During these years, Caldini arrived at a fundamental revelation: “You have to show in images what images cannot show.” His films have always strived to respond to this precept. In the last years of the dictatorship, he made A través de las ruinas (1982), a work that is both intimate and political, descriptive and dreamlike, a synthesis of what cinema could have been. The aesthetic of his films and the credo that inspired them would leave a lasting impression on young Argentinian filmmakers of the next generation, while Caldini went on to explore the digital format. In recent years, he has concentrated on creating performances using several Super 8 projectors, which he manipulates live, letting the improvised soundtrack produce something different every time.
On the occasion of this exceptional screening, which will take place at the movie theatre SCENA in Roma, Italy, Light Cone is delighted to present eight works by Claudio Caldini. The program includes four Super 8 films, two digital works, and two performances using triple Super 8 projection. The films will be projected by the filmmaker himself and by Emmanuel Lefrant, director of Light Cone. The two Super 8 performances, FANTASMAS CROMÁTICOS and H R Z N T, will be accompanied by a live sound improvisation by Claudio Caldini and Orazio Leogrande.
