  • eau de cinema: constellations & contradictions

    By on

    Opening: July 13, 18h

Microscope Gallery is extremely pleased to present the first solo exhibition of works at the gallery by Bradley Eroseau de cinema: constellations & contradictions finds the seminal New York artist – who is recognized for his work with multiple mediums, both the concrete and ephemeral, and as a force behind numerous collaborative endeavors – in pursuit of the essence of the artistic impulse.

The exhibition is an elaboration on Eros’ eau de cinema, a concept he has been developing for several years and has now extended to the mediums of film and video installation, photography, sound, collage, sculpture, drawings and other works on paper, some as collaborations including those with members of the expanded cinema & sound group Optipus, which will be added during the course of the exhibition. For eau de cinema: constellations & contradictions, Eros assumes as his starting point the moving image, specifically works on celluloid film in which the actual work is an ephemeral by-product of the physical materials, requiring a projector and light to be viewed. He suggests that much like perfume, film is an experience that lingers in both space and memory.

  • Walter Ungerer: All the Days of the Year

    By on

This video installation by Walter Ungerer is a record of one year as seen from Mount Battie, Maine. Every day for a year, 13 digital video clips were recorded from a single location on a rock on a hill overlooking the ocean. The camera would record for ten seconds then pivot a few degrees counterclockwise and record for another ten seconds. This process was repeated until the camera returned to its original position, having recorded 13 ten-second clips describing a 360-degree view. The process was repeated from the same location day after day — sometimes at sunrise, sometimes midday, sometimes at sunset, sometimes at night.

The resulting film is a record of the seasons; the changing light, from dawn to evening and night; the changing weather, from bright sun to fog to rain and snow. It is a record of the visitors that make a pilgrimage to the vista that overlooks a small harbor, the Atlantic coastal islands, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is not a story — there is no script, no actors, and no dialogue — yet it conveys a story: humanity in peaceful revelry of a place on earth.

  • Christoph Girardet & Matthias Müller - Tell Me What You See

    By on

Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller predominately make use of found footage in their films which they combine to produce new works. Their dealings with the media of film come together in intense combinations of images and film collages that unfold new layers of meaning.

Locomotive from 2008, a fast-moving video triptych comprising scene showing railway trains taken from hundreds of movies, came about in this manner. Departure and arrival, endings and new beginnings, exoticism and the thrill of adventure interlock are condensed into an exciting new narrative.

Meteor from 2011 is a filmic metaphor for childhood desire and imagination. Assembled from movies, uprooted fragments from fairy tales and old science fiction material, Meteor stages the imaginary world of the child at the threshold of self-discovery and disentanglement. Black and white excerpts of aggressive, fearful or languorous boys from films by Jean Vigo, Ingmar Bergman or François Truffaut merge with glowingly colorful images of rockets speeding through outer space or cosmic objects from the genre of science fiction.

  • European Expanded Cinema

    By on

Expanded cinema represents an intersection of hybrid and performative audiovisual practices that have met a reupdate after the 2000s in the field of contemporary art and experimental cinema. The History and Aesthethics of Cinema Section at the University of Lausanne and the research project HES-SO Cinema exposé at ECAL organize at the Sputnik Cinema (Geneva), 27 September 2013, a study day and evening performance on these artistic manifestations. The expanded cinema is at the intersection of the areas of independent film, performance, experimental music, contemporary dance, poetry and visual art installation, while deploying in places the mass culture.

With the occasion of this study day, there will be an opportunity to trace the expanded cinema performances that are deployed in Europe and regroup on a theoretical plan the visual and hearing devices mobilized by these expanded artistic practice, taking as case studies in Switzerland, Italy, France and Britain. We thus separate from current studies on this phenomenon, which mainly focus on the American scene. The challenge is to confront theoretical issues in artistic practices, crossing lectures by academics, curators and artists in live performances with film.

Organized by Section d’histoire et esthétique du cinéma,

    Dates:
