  • (S8) 6th Mostra de Cinema Periférico

    This year's edition of (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (June 3-7, A Coruña, Spain) is focused on two main strands: on the one hand, a Ken Jacobs restrospective, including two Nervous Magic Lantern performances and a masterclass; on the other hand, a focus on Brazilian avant-garde cinema, including classic films as Mario Peixoto's Límite or others by proponents of the CInema Novo and Cinema Marginal movements such as Glauber Rocha, Nelson Pereira dos Santos and Rogério Sganzerla. The artistic duo Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn (Distruktur) will present a selection of their works and a triple film performance using 16mm projectors. The Brazilian avant-garde section will also imnclude works by Duo Strangloscope, Gustavo Beck, Ana Vaz, Helder Martinovsky, Priscyla Bettim and Renato Coelho.

    25 FPS Festival promotes independent and non-commercial films which innovatively explore the possibilities of cinematic language, narration and the medium itself, cross film types and genres and broaden the notion of film as art. It promotes expressive original concepts, progresses in terms of theme, idea and aesthetics, as well as works that perpetuate the tradition of avant-garde and experimental film. Main festival's sections are Competition program, Jury's Choice, Expanded Cinema, Reflexes, Kino 23.

  • Courtisane Festival 2015

    Just two days more until the beginning of the 2015 Courtisane Festival (April 1-5, Ghent, Belgium). Now in its fourteenth year, the festival keeps a solid programme as ever with their 'Artists in focus' section, dedicated to Thom Andersen and Pedro Costa. Each filmmaker will be the protagonist of a series of different events including screenings of their work, masterclasses and carte blanches. 

    The festival will also present a selection of over 50 films from the L.A. Rebellion movement, including works by Charles Burnett, Haile Gerima, Larry Clark and Billy Woodberry. The Selection strand will feature films and videos by Basma Alsharif, Mary Helena Clark, Beatrice Gibson, Ernie Gehr, Morgan Fisher, Ute Aurand and Luke Fowler, among many others.

  • Punto y Raya Academy 2015

    Punto y Raya Academy 2015 is the first International Symposium devoted to abstract art in motion, that will be held from May 7th through 10th at La Casa Encendida in Madrid (Spain), with the participation of over 15 international guests, such as Józef Robakowski, Steven Woloshen, Robert Seidel and Sabrina Schmid, among others.

    The programme will feature several masterclasses by the guest artists, round tables, monographic screenings and various live performances.

  • Crossroads 2015

    San Francisco Cinematheque announces Crossroads 2015 (April 10–12) at San Francisco's Victoria Theatre. Founded by filmmaker Bruce Baillie in 1961, San Francisco Cinematheque is an internationally recognized arts institution and the Bay Area’s premier venue for avant-garde/experimental, underground and personally expressive film and video work.

    Crossroads 2015 will present over sixty films, videos and performance works by over fifty filmmakers from around the world screened in nine feature-length programs. Highlights of this edition include a program of live performance cinema works by OJOBOCA, Allison Leigh Holt & Kadet Kuhne, Michael A. Morris and Kerry Laitala & Voicehandler; and screeening of the latest works, many of them premieres, by Scott Stark, Karissa Hahn, Stephen Broomer, Pablo Mazzolo, Paul Clipson, Luis Macías, Malena Szlam, Abigail Child, Basma Alsharif, Jean-Paul Kelly, Jeanne Liotta and Mike Stoltz, among many others.

  • 53rd Ann Arbor Film Festival

    Ann Arbor Film Festival, the oldest festival dedicated to experimental film & video, returns next week in its 53rd edition, with a programme of over 200 films, videos and live performances. During the week-long festival (March 24th - 29th), its attendants will be able to enjoy retrospective screenings dedicated to the work of Tacita Dean (UK) and Wojciech Bakowski (Poland), as well as the two-programme selection titled Computer Age: Early Computer Movies 1952–1987, curated by Gregory Zinman and Leo Goldsmith. The festival will also feature new works by Kevin Jerome Everson, Mike Hoolboom, Sergei Loznitsa, Jennifer ReederTomonari Nishikawa, Shambhavi Kaul, Barbara Sternberg, Stephen Connolly, Robert Todd, Peggy Ahwesh and Anja Dornieden and Juan David González Monroy, among many others.

  • CROSSROADS 2015, program 5: Apparent Motion: Exposing the Primal Light Machine

Morris; Kerry Laitala and OJOBOCA- NOW I WANT TO LAUGH (2014) by OJOBOCA; 16mm double projection, color, sound, 15 minutes, from the makers bay area premiere—This is a simulation of a prototype for a “feeling machine” envisioned by Dr. D. Forme in 1917. This simulation is based on a short description and diagram found in the doctor’s notebooks. The description focuses on only one section of the machine. Brief mentions of the other sections were included but no detailed information was discovered. Obviously, the machine was never built.
