THEME
The Great Acceleration began on Monday, July 16, 1945 in the New Mexico desert. On that day, during the first detonation of a nuclear weapon, radioactive isotopes were emitted into the atmosphere and, after detonation, they spread across the globe. This act, which is undoubtedly attributable only to human activity, marks the beginning of the Great Acceleration and the beginning of the Anthropocene. Humans now act as a geological force on Earth, a system in which the oceans, the atmosphere, and the Earth's crust, as well as all living beings, are connected. The Great Acceleration is a term that in a comprehensive way allows mapping and detection of the nature of changes that happened after the 1950s and imply economic, military, spatial, political and technological transformations of the global society.

This comprehensive change simultaneously permeates both the socio-economic system and the biophysical sphere of the Earth, deleting the boundaries between the planetary system and the socio-economic system, nature and culture, leaving unimaginable and unmanageable consequences. The Great Acceleration started as a result of human activities, and the indicators are socio-economic (economic and population growth, direct foreign investment, energy consumption, telecommunications, transport, water use, etc.) as well as those concerning the Earth's system (increase in CO2, methane, ocean acidity, surface temperature, loss of tropical forests, etc.).

The inability to control economic and technological progress creates an impression that humanity has no alternative to maximizing this acceleration and to the intensification of technology, automation, the integration of the digital and the human, and deregulation. Yet, various attempts to destroy the capitalist system or create artificial super intelligence are just some of the movements that seek to establish a different, networked world in which a person is no longer the point of all connections. Has The Great Acceleration provoked a reactive attempt to slow down human perception and imagination in contemporary art practices? From landscape cinema that examines relationships between people and space to slow cinema that establishes some other time, The Great Acceleration can be thought critically in different ways.

We invite moving image works that intervene in images and documents of disasters, the destruction of the environment, the loss of borders between humans and non-humans, population growth, laws of nature, effects of technology, inequality, and protests. We also invite alternative forms that think and produce the experience of a different time, examine the relationships between man and space geographically and historically, and represent different ways of acting and speculative fictions of the future.

ALTERNATIVE FILM/VIDEO is an international Festival established in 1982. As a meeting place for artists, theorists, critics and audiences, the Festival’s goal is to record and theoretically define movements, promote constructive values and support new creative possibilities in visual media. The idea of “Alternative” is about work that does not fall into easy categorizations, and that operates counter to dominant commercial and aesthetic trends. The Festival provides a glimpse of the current state of new film and video tendencies in the region and the world. The founder and organizer of the festival is Academic Film Center at Students’ City Cultural Center in Belgrade.
