Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola is an international centre for thinking, research, experimental practice and pedagogical innovation based around the past, present and future of cinema.

The purpose of the EQZE is to train filmmakers in the broad, cross-cutting sense of the term; filmmakers that can actively confront and interact with the cinema of the past (through research and preservation), with the cinema of the present (through curating and programming) and with the cinema of the future (through creation) developping a comprehensive unitary vision.

We like to refer to the EQZE as precisely the school of the three ages of cinema, because the three institutions that worked together to set it up aim to study and work, precisely, on the past (Basque Film Library), the present (San Sebastian International Film Festival) and future of creative cinema (Tabakalera). EQZE pictures this educational project through three postgraduate programs, that as a whole, these three postgraduate courses identify and define our idea of cinema:

  • FILM PRESERVATION STUDIES | Coordinated by Clara Sánchez-Dehesa | The Film Preservation Studies focuses on the theoretical and practical training  in the identification, classification, restoration and preservation of our cinematic and audio-visual heritage.
  • FILM CURATING STUDIES | Coordinated by María Palacios | The Film Curating Studies area aims to provide training in the conceptualisation, development, management and dissemination of all kinds of programmes in which cinema and the audio-visual arts play the leading role.
  • FILMMAKING STUDIES | Coordinated by Laida Lertxundi | The Filmmaking Studies speciality focuses on the theoretical and methodological training, as well as practical research, of anyone interested in making films or artistic audio-visual work.

EQZE, based in Tabakalera International Center for Contemporary Culture, is a project created and financed by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, with the collaboration of the Basque Film Archive, the San Sebastian International Film Festival and the cultural project of Tabakalera.
