Two evenings of avant-garde films will be presented celebrating, in Canyon Cinema’s 45th year, the 2008 publication of Canyon Cinema—The Life and Times of an Independent Film Distributor, by film scholar Scott MacDonald. This major work documents Canyon Cinema’s roots as gleaned from the words, stories, artifacts and people that make up its rich historical legacy.

“Lovingly detailed history. Drawing from a wealth of primary materials . . . a compelling narrative of American avant-garde cinema. Wonderful in its particulars.”—San Francisco Bay Guardian

“An exemplary demonstration that scholarship can be both intelligent and fun to read.”—Film Comment

“Fills a major gap in our knowledge of the history of avant-garde film.”—Artforum
