Re:Cinema is an ongoing research project that was initiated by artist and academic Ryszard Dabek in 2013. In its original formation Re:Cinema consisted of two curated exhibitions held at Sydney College of the Arts in Sydney and Parsons the New School in New York. Drawing on a wide range range of artistic activity that included photography, sculpture, performance, installation, film and video the exhibitions explored the idea of the cinematic as a persistent conceptual and visual presence in contemporary artistic practice. These complimentary exhibitions were accompanied by a publication and a conference paper delivered to the International Symposium for Electronic Art that explored the themes of the project.

This latest manifestation of Re:Cinema will take the form of a program of new moving image based works.  Curated by Ryszard Dabek and John Di Stefano the program will feature an international selection of current works that in some way engage the idea of the ‘cinematic’.  This program will premiere at the Sydney Underground Film Festival in September 2016 where it will be accompanied by a symposium featuring the curators and invited speakers discussing ideas surrounding the cinematic. A printed publication will be issued later in 2016 that will  document both the program and the surrounding ideas and discussions through a series of specially written essays.
