Nicky Hamlyn and Simon Payne present a programme of single-screen and expanded films and videos that explore colour field abstraction, grids, lines, shadows, holes and frames-within-frames that are often underpinned by repetitive, almost musical structuring. Payne's digital video works involve elementary transitions and alternating graphic forms that create spatial depths within the screen but also bounce back to affect the environment in which they're shown. Hamlyn's 16mm film loop performances derive from elementary repeating patterns that, when brought together with multiple shifting projectors, produce numerous rhythmic permutations of filmic planes that find and represent new three-dimensional layers and conjunctions. Together these filmmakers bring both a space for reflection and a heightened awareness of the active function of the frame, through its careful subdivision.

There will be a discussion led by the artists after the screening.

This is an Analogue Ensemble event and part of the Whitstable Biennale 2018 Off-Site Programme. Supported by public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, School of Arts University of Kent and Whitstable Biennale.
