There's a Hole in the Sky

The opening stanza of Derek Walcott's Names slices through waves breaking on the windward side of Barbados, the landing point for the first black slave society: “A sea eagle screams from the rock, and my race began like the osprey, with that cry, that terrible vowel, that I.” Travelling inland from the shore, the narrator of Helen Cammock's essay film—always speaking in the first person, whether as herself or as the embodiment of other voices (from writers to emigrants)—searches for the last vestiges of the sugar trade, a colonial project in freefall.

TANK art space invites you to the opening of the exhibition BOOM CUT GUERILLA that will take place on August 25th from 6 to 10 pm. Artists and curators in attendance.

BOOM CUT GUERILLA consists of a selection of video art pieces, installations, documentary essays and experimental films which question the materiality of the image through different reuse practices (found footage, mash up, datamoshing) in order to tackle the actual proliferation of images, their supposed message, and their usages.

- Handsworth Songs (John Akomfrah/Black Audio Film Collective, 16mm, 1986, 60 mins)

In light of the recent waves of social unrest in Britain, we have decided to present a screening of Black Audio Film Collective's seminal essay film Handsworth Songs, which takes the 1985 Birmingham riots as its point of departure.

"The collective's key work, Handsworth Songs (1986), is a succinct articulation of the dialectic of crisis and difference, and a critical primer - in artistic terms - of transnational post-colonialism. Though Handsworth Songs is an analytical essay on the cultural conditions under which young black men and women in Britain lived, and the racist policing tactics directed against them, the film, produced for Channel Four, did not merely reflect upon the structural violence of Thatcherism. In the aftermath of the protests in Handsworth, the film inhabits a different order of things: it is as much about elsewhere as about Britain.
