Javier Aguirre

Javier Aguirre Fernández (born in San Sebastián, Spain, on 13th June 1935-died in Madrid, Spain, on 4th December 2019) is a spanish film director, producer, cinematographer and writer.

Biography He was born on June 13, 1935 in San Sebastián. He married the actress Enriqueta Carballeira in 1966, who he divorced some years later. He married then to actress Esperanza Roy.

He studied filmmaking in the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía, while at the same time wrote as film critic for magazines such as Radiocinema, Film Ideal and Primer Plano. He started his professional career as an assistant director.

In the 60s and 70s he made many commercial films (from many different genres such as horror or exploitation) while at the same time developing a body of work in the experimental and avant-garde filmmaking. Especially noteworthy are the short films where he develops his concept of Anticine (Anticinema).
