Rebecca Meyers

Rebecca Meyers (b. 1976, New York) is a filmmaker who shoots, edits, and finishes on 16mm film. Meyers chooses to work with “small gauge” 16mm film because it offers an intimate means of exploration and the opportunity for direct connection with light, which is in many ways at the core of her work. Her exploration of the resolution, contrast, and texture of light, together with her keen eye for the appearance of nature in our lives, lend nuance and intensity to her short films.

    What interests Rebecca Meyers is not how cinema represents reality but how it transforms it, giving it a palpably different rhythm, colour and sound. Her 16 mm films are ways of closely observing the most everyday of spaces, presenting them full of mystery, stripped of their familiarity, open to infinite possibilities of research. Domestic landscapes noted from a window, stories shrouded beneath the sea’s blue mantle or the presence of an unexpected animal world in the urban environment are some of the constant themes of research found in her films.

    The Ann Arbor Film Festival is a pioneer of the traveling film festival concept, having launched an annual tour program in 1964. The AAFF selects films from the past years festival to screen in art house theaters, museums, universities, cinematheques and media art centers. All filmmakers participating on the tour are paid to screen their work, providing direct support to these independent artists.

    In her nimble, intimately-observed films, Cambridge-based filmmaker Rebecca Meyers illuminates the uncanny and exquisite in the everyday. lions and tigers and bears (2006) seeks out urban wildlife–from spiders and pigeons to bronze lions and chrome-plated jaguars; night side (2008) captures a wintry twilight of street lamp halos and solitary animals.  Shot along the Massachusetts coast, Meyers’ latest film is a haunting ode to the sea.  Combining historical accounts of ocean travel and disaster with images of its vast, roiling expanse, blue mantle (2010) meditates on humanity’s attempts to conquer the deep and reflects on its role as a metaphor and passageway to the unknown. This evening, Meyers presents these and a selection of earlier works, including glow in the dark (2002) and things we want to see (2004).     The sea has always been present on screen as a backdrop to stories of journeys, battles, adventures and scientific expeditions to explore its depths. But more than just a location, the sea is the star of the films in this session, which evoke the centrality of this “place” and maritime motifs, ships and seamen, in their representational strategies, a phenomenon prefigured in painting and literature. The films of Rosalind Nashashibi, Rebecca Meyers and Peter Hutton are nautical incursions, shipboard projects splashed with literary citations and pictorial references. [16-mm screening]
