Moviate Underground Film Festival

Moviate Underground at Artsfest takes place during Memorial Day weekend in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Artsfest brings in thousands of art and film enthusiasts who attend multi-genre film screenings at multiple venues around the capital city of Harrisburg.

We love to project 16mm and super8 films at the festival, and prefer film prints over digital whenever possible.

The festival is juried by 5 members of the film community, and awards are presented for Best Documentary, Best Narrative, Best Experimental, Best Animation, Best Local Production, and Best of Show.

Experimental

While Moviate Underground is an extremely diverse festival exhibiting a wide rage of styles, experimental and avant garde films live very close to our heart. (check out our list of previous filmmakers) Please submit ANYTHING experimental.

Animation

Each year Moviate Underground dedicates at least 1-2 hours to animated films, usually separated in to kid-friendly and more artistically challenging blocks. We LOVE anything handmade, or made with super-8 or 16mm stock, but will accept all types of animation.

Documentary

Offbeat or controversial topics are preferred, different styles in the genre are accepted. We also love music documentaries. In past years we've had several visiting filmmakers bring documentary premiers, with excellent turnouts.

Narrative

Quirky and clever, from mumblecore to minimal, narrative films in many genres are screened. All types are used as a major component of the festival. If it looks good and/or keeps us hooked we want it.

AND we especially love to see anything made on Super 8 or 16mm film.

Central Pennsylvania Productions

We will always try to give preference to films created and produced in the Central Pennsylvania area. Not only in the hopes that filmmakers will attend, but also because this is a culturally expansive area that we want to support!

NON-PROFIT STATEMENT: All proceeds from any Moviate or Moviate Sound event benefits visiting filmmakers and visiting musicians, and any upcoming Moviate Film Camp (which allows at-risk youth the opportunity to make their own films.( Funds are used for film, film transfer services, computer and video equipment, and guest artists. Moviate is run on a completely volunteer basis, and volunteers are always welcome to help in any way. Moviate is a non-profit film organization under the fiscal sponsorship of Berks Filmmakers, Inc. one of the longest operating independent film cooperatives in the United States.
