“The more real a thing it is, the more mysterious it becomes.” Jack Chambers

Early Monthly Segments is pleased to host the launch of three small books by Barbara Sternberg. Every Day 1, 2, 3 looks at the process of living and the process of filmmaking—how the quotidian influences the creative practice and how one moves from the real world to the imaginative world of artmaking. The launch will be accompanied by a short screening of four films followed by a discussion on the relation between filmmaking and book-making.

Sternberg has been an important presence in the Canadian film scene, making personal experimental films on 16mm since the late Seventies. Her films are lyrical invocations of memory and medium, utilizing diary filmmaking and rephotography to analyze what it is to live. The four films in this program are inquiries into the nature of love. In her classic At Present, she focuses specifically on the relationships between men and women, but in her later films in this program, this broadens towards family, friends and the impact of aging towards our relationships with each other.
